Best film, best director, best actor: "Oppenheimer" triumphs at the Oscars

The predicted landslide did indeed occur: "Oppenheimer" won the Oscar for Best Picture on Sunday, along with six other statuettes, on a night that also saw Yorgos Lanthimos' "Poor Creatures" rewarded handsomely. As for the French film "Anatomie d'une chute", it walked away with the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

Buoyed by rave reviews and an impeccable cast, Christopher Nolan's portrait of the father of the atomic bomb dominated the evening. "I can't emphasise enough the incredible team we've assembled for this film", said the director, taking advantage of his award for Best Director to thank all the actors.

Cillian Murphy, masterful as Robert Oppenheimer, a nuclear genius full of contradictions and doubts, won the Oscar for Best Actor. "For better or for worse, we live in the world of Oppenheimer" and the atomic bomb, observed the Irishman. "So I'd really like to dedicate this award to peacemakers around the world.

Robert Downey Jr, his on-screen antagonist, who plays a conservative bureaucrat orchestrating the public humiliation of the scientist, won the Best Supporting Actor award.

The film's accolade was complemented by other technical statuettes - editing, cinematography, soundtrack - in keeping with its reputation as a popular masterpiece since its theatrical release this summer.

Emma Stone, a triumphant "poor creature

Actress Emma Stone was the other big winner of the evening. After "La La Land" in 2017, she picked up her second Best Actress Oscar for "Poor Creatures". This baroque tale by Yorgos Lanthimos won a total of four statuettes, praised in particular for its retro-futuristic aesthetic.

Emma Stone plays Bella Baxter, a suicidal woman brought back to life by a mad scientist who implants the brain of the baby she was carrying inside her. She delivers a joyously regressive performance as a creature who discovers sex and a thousand other pleasures in life without shame or prejudice.

This role was "the gift of a lifetime", the actress reacted, thanking her director and expressing her admiration for all her competitors. This category was the tightest: Lily Gladstone, remarkable as a Native American woman poisoned by her husband in Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon", went home empty-handed.

"Anatomie d'une chute" settles for a second-place finish

The French film Anatomie d'une chute was unable to prevent this predicted triumph. A legal thriller about the downfall of a dysfunctional artistic couple, in which an ambiguous writer played by Sandra Hüller finds herself accused of murdering her husband, it had to make do with just one Oscar out of the five categories in which it was nominated, for Best Original Screenplay.

"It will help me get through my mid-life crisis," joked an emotional French filmmaker Justine Triet, who worked alongside Nolan and Martin Scorsese on the film. "It's been a crazy year," she huffed, alongside her partner Arthur Harari, with whom she co-wrote the script. Winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes, Anatomy of a Fall won two Golden Globes and a Bafta - the equivalent of the British Césars.

His work is the best example of French cinema abroad since "Amour", which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 2013, and "The Artist", which won five statuettes in 2012.

Hayao Miyazaki, 21 years after "Chihiro".

The British film "The Zone of Interest" won the Oscar for Best International Film for its chronicle of the carefree life of a Nazi family just outside Auschwitz. Director Jonathan Glazer took the opportunity to send a message of peace to the Middle East, which is currently being undermined by Israel's war in Gaza.

"Our film shows how dehumanisation leads to the worst", said the Jewish film-maker, adding that the Israelis who died on 7 October in the Hamas attack and the 31,000 Palestinians who died are "all victims of this dehumanisation" (see also the box).

Among the other major awards, Da'Vine Joy Randolph ("Winter Break") was voted Best Supporting Actress. "The Boy and the Heron", by Japanese master Hayao Miyazaki, won the Oscar for Best Animated Film, his second, 21 years after "Chihiro's Journey".

Paris 2024 Olympics: a computer and USB sticks containing security plans stolen from a train in Paris

The data was stolen from the briefcase of a Paris City Council engineer, who lodged a complaint with the Gare du Nord police station on Monday evening.

Sensitive data stolen just a few months before the competition. A bag containing a computer and two USB sticks containing the security plans for the Paris Olympic Games drawn up by the municipal police was stolen from a train at the Gare du Nord on Monday evening, police sources said on Tuesday, confirming a report by BFMTV.

The bag belonged to an engineer from Paris City Hall, it was added. At Gare du Nord, he had boarded a train going to Creil, in the Oise region. He had put his bag in the luggage compartment above his seat, according to the initial information given to the police by the man, who lodged a complaint with the Gare du Nord police station on Monday evening.

Changing trains

As his train was delayed, he decided to change trains and take another one that was also leaving for Creil, according to the police source reporting the employee's testimony. The owner of the bag explained that his work computer and two USB sticks contained sensitive data, namely the security plans for the Paris 2024 Olympics by the municipal police.

The investigation has been handed over to the regional transport police. Contacted by Le Parisien, Paris City Hall was unable to comment. The city plans to mobilise 2,000 municipal police officers for the Olympic Games, scheduled to run from 26 July to 11 August.

Football: disappointed by Lionel Messi's attitude, China cancels two Argentina matches on home soil

The world champion was due to play against Nigeria and Côte d'Ivoire on an Asian tour in March, but the uproar caused by his absence and his attitude at a meeting in Hong Kong with his Miami club prompted the Chinese organisers to back out.

Lionel Messi's popularity in China is suffering quite a deflation. On Friday 9 and Saturday 10 February, the country announced that it would not be hosting two friendly matches for the Argentinian national team, following the controversy surrounding the player's tour of Asia with his club, Inter Miami.

The world champions had announced a tour of China from 18 to 26 March, during which they would face Nigeria in the big city of Hangzhou and Côte d'Ivoire in Beijing.

"A company was in talks with the Argentinian team about coming to Hangzhou in March to play a friendly match.said the Hangzhou Sports Bureau in a statement on Friday evening. For reasons that are well known to everyone, according to the competent authorities, the conditions for the event not to take place have been met and it has been decided to cancel it".

Lionel Messi and his American club drew the ire of fans when the Argentinian remained on the bench during a friendly match against a local team in Hong Kong on Sunday, citing an injury. The spectators, who had paid up to 4,800 Hong Kong dollars (570 euros), expressed their displeasure at the player's absence, and also at his attitude, as he did not address the audience to apologise. The Argentine and David Beckham, co-owner of Inter Miami, were booed in the Hong Kong stadium.

"The Chinese don't lie down".

The controversy flared up again on Wednesday when Lionel Messi played thirty minutes of a friendly match in Japan, where several photos show him all smiles, whereas he appeared to have a closed face in Hong Kong, a semi-autonomous Chinese territory.

"Many football fans and Internet friends have recently asked us for information about Lionel Messi's match in Beijing".The Beijing Football Association, the body that oversees football in the Chinese capital, said on Saturday. "After verification [by our services], For the time being, Beijing has no plans to organise the match in which Lionel Messi was due to take part".she stressed in a press release.

On the Chinese social network Weibo, the vast majority of Internet users seemed to support the cancellation, despite the immense popularity enjoyed by Messi in China up until then.

"If he doesn't respect his Chinese fans, we can't let him take a penny from the Chinese".reacted one user, in tune with the general tone of the messages. "We gave him our love and he treats us like that. That slap [cancellation] is deserved".wrote another. "A courageous decision, "The Chinese don't lie down". and "Fuck off Messi!" were among the most frequently published comments.

The company that organised the event in Hong Kong, Tatler Asia, promised ticket buyers a refund of 50 %. "Injuries are part of the game and we understand that. However, we were saddened by the fact that the players didn't show enough respect to the supporters present".the company stressed.

A lucrative market for the Argentinian federation

The likely cancellation of the tour of China is a headache for the Argentine Football Association (AFA), which regards the Asian giant as a strategic market. In June 2023, Argentina already played a friendly match in Beijing during a visit that led to lucrative contracts with local companies. The AFA has sponsorship and cooperation contracts with coffee chain Cotti Coffee and Chinese dairy products leader Yili, among others.

"We are fully aware of the importance, uniqueness and enormous growth potential of the AFA in the Chinese market.said Leandro Petersen, the AFA's Sales and Marketing Director, recently.

The Chinese newspaper Global Times, known for its nationalist stance, implied in an editorial this week that the behaviour of Inter Miami and Messi could perhaps have implications for the country. "political motivations. The Hong Kong authorities have regularly been in the crosshairs of the United States and the United Kingdom since the introduction of a national security law in the semi-autonomous territory, which has helped to muzzle political opposition.

Lunar New Year 2024: What does the Year of the Wooden Dragon have in store for us?

ASIAN TRADITION
Wooden or not, the Dragon is the most powerful animal in the Chinese zodiac, a symbol of luck and success.

The essentials

  •
The Dragon, celebrated by Asian communities as a good luck charm, embodies power, luck and success.
  •
The Year of the Wooden Dragon encourages us to act on our commitments, taking a long-term, mutually supportive view of every action we take.
  •
To take full advantage of the Wooden Dragon's influences, be proactive and open to change. Explore new horizons, trust your instincts and cultivate flexibility to achieve your goals in 2024.

10 January is the big kick-off in the Chinese calendar, with a Lunar New Year begins, under the sign of the Wooden Dragon. After the Water Rabbit in 2023, the predictions for 2024 promise a much more favourable period. In this cycle of twelve years symbolised by twelve animals (Rat, Buffalo, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig), each year is also associated with one of the five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water, creating a complex picture of luck and success.

The Dragon, the luckiest animal in the zodiac

Asian communities celebrate Dragon as the good luck animal par excellence. For those born under this sign, power, luck and success are their faithful companions. Dragon representatives are also distinguished by their intelligence and tenacity. They will do anything to achieve their goals, braving obstacles with consuming ambition. Their natural leadership propels them to the top, where they excel. It's worth noting, however, that these natives can find it difficult to deal with criticism.

2024, the year of action

In 2023, if you felt a kind of hibernation, you were in phase with the energy of the Water Rabbit. But with the arrival of the Wood Dragon in 2024, a completely different scenario is taking shape. This year is all about action and movement. The Dragon, a mythical creature of feathers, scales and claws, symbolises bold energy. The spring months in particular will offer a whole host of opportunities. But you'll need to select your projects carefully.

Finances in good shape

On the economic front, prosperity is on the horizon. Wise investments and entrepreneurial initiatives are favoured, while visionary minds will find unexpected allies in their quest for progress. Nevertheless, it is important to remain cautious in this fast-moving environment. Vigilance and wise risk management remain imperatives for any economic player wishing to prosper.

A serene relationship

For singles looking for love, or for couples already in love, the Year of the Wood Dragon offers fertile ground for relationships to flourish. This is because the energy of Wood manifests itself in an atmosphere of calm and gentleness. In this serene atmosphere, hearts open more easily, minds are calmed and empathy flourishes. Benevolence becomes the watchword for interactions.

Commitment as a key value in the coming months

The Year of the Wooden Dragon urges us to act in harmony with our values, taking a long-term view of every action we take. It's a time when the right words and the importance of solidarity take on their full meaning. Despite the challenges that lie ahead, this is a year to strengthen ties and bring cooperation to the fore. Ecology is also at the heart of our concerns, as part of a collective approach for the years to come.

The right attitude to adopt this year

To take full advantage of the energies of the Wood Dragon, it's essential to adopt a proactive attitude that's open to change. Dare to leave your comfort zone, explore new territory and let your instincts guide you. Flexibility and adaptability will be your best assets in this quest for excellence and self-fulfilment. And don't forget the importance of patience and perseverance. While the Dragon can offer dizzying heights, it can also confront you with unexpected obstacles.

CAN 2024: SYMBOLIC GESTURE BY DR CONGO PLAYERS IN SUPPORT OF THEIR PEOPLE

Before facing Côte d'Ivoire in the semi-final of the African Cup of Nations, the DR Congo players made a gesture of support for the victims of the armed conflict in the east of the country.

The right hand over the mouth, the left hand like a pistol to the temple. During the broadcast of their anthem before kick-off of the African Cup of Nations semi-final against Côte d'Ivoire, the DR Congo players made a gesture of support for their compatriots, victims of the conflict between government forces and the M23 rebels in the east of the country.

Before the match, and following "the atrocities committed on the population (...) by the rebels", the DRC football federation announced that a black armband would be worn "in mourning and in memory" of the victims.

Bakambu's speech

In recent days, clashes in Masisi territory, to the west of the provincial capital of North Kivu, have led to further population displacements and dozens of wounded being rushed to overwhelmed health centres. According to medical and security sources quoted by AFP, at least six people were killed in Wednesday's shelling in Sake and, throughout the day, thousands of people fleeing the fighting arrived in Goma, some twenty kilometres away.

Since the end of 2021, two territories in North Kivu, Rutshuru and Masisi, have been in the grip of a conflict pitting the M23 ("March 23 Movement") rebellion, supported by units of the Rwandan army, against government forces associated in particular with armed groups calling themselves "patriots".

The situation has prompted several players in the national team to speak out. "Everyone sees the massacres in eastern Congo, but everyone keeps quiet. Put the same energy you put into talking about the African Cup of Nations into highlighting what's happening here, there are no small gestures," declared former Marseille striker Cédric Bakambu. Speaking to RMC Sport's After CAN, coach Sébastien Desabre also had his say on the subject: "We're doing everything we can to make our people proud. It's the image of the Congolese that we're promoting.

BRAZIL: EXPLOSION IN CASES OF DENGUE FEVER IN RIO AND SAO PAULO AS CARNIVAL APPROACHES

Just a few days before the famous Brazilian carnival, which attracts millions of visitors, the country is facing a worrying upsurge in cases of dengue fever. Several dozen deaths have already been reported.

Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil's two most populous cities, have announced measures to deal with the explosion in cases of dengue fever in the run-up to Carnival, which attracts millions of tourists from all over the world.

Brazil recorded 345,235 probable cases of dengue fever in the first five weeks of the year, almost four times as many as in the same period in 2023 (93,298), according to the latest figures from the Ministry of Health.

Health measures

The Ministry has also reported 31 confirmed deaths, while 234 others that could have been caused by this disease are still being analysed.

On Tuesday 6 February, the local authorities in Sao Paulo inaugurated an Emergency Operations Centre to monitor the spread of the disease in Latin America's largest megalopolis and the more than 600 other cities in the state of Sao Paulo.

A drone that sprays larvicide in hard-to-reach places has been tested to neutralise the mosquitoes that transmit this disease, which has symptoms similar to malaria.

The city of Rio de Janeiro declared a state of public health emergency on Monday.

In this mecca of Brazilian carnival, which officially kicks off on Friday, the authorities have announced the opening of ten treatment centres to relieve hospital overcrowding.

"It's a good thing they opened this centre, because hospitals alone can't cope with this situation", Luciana Ferreira, a cleaner and patient at one of these care centres in Curicica, a working-class district in the west of Rio, told AFP.

Field hospital

Other hard-hit cities have taken steps to combat dengue fever, such as the capital Brasilia, where a field hospital receives patients 24 hours a day.

"We give them basic care, hydrate them and then either discharge them or send them to a larger care centre," explains Mauricio Braga, deputy director of the air force health services.

A fortnight ago, the government announced that a free vaccination campaign targeting 3.2 million people would take place in February.

But the date for the start of immunisation with the Qdenga vaccine, produced by the Japanese laboratory Takeda, has still not been announced.

The laboratory's "limited" production capacity meant that mass vaccination was not possible, so the authorities decided to target the 10-14 age group, which accounts for the highest number of hospital admissions.

The government recently announced that it was studying the possibility of increasing the number of doses available by producing vaccines in Brazil, a country with a population of 203 million.

The Apple Vision Pro has just been released, and the virtual and augmented reality headset is already giving Americans ideas.

Apple Vision Pro, the headset launched to great fanfare by the Apple brand, is already experiencing problems, less than two days after its release in the United States.

TECHNOLOGY - As with everything else, there is a time and a place for using Apple Vision Pro, the Apple virtual and augmented reality headset released in the United States on Friday 2 February. Although it has been available for purchase for less than 48 hours, at a price of 3,500 dollars, its use has already led to some funny, and sometimes dangerous, situations.

As you can see in the video at the top of the articleFor example, one of the new owners of the Apple Vision Pro had the bad idea of using it while driving his Tesla. We see him with just one hand on the steering wheel, preferring to use them to navigate on his augmented reality headset while the car's autopilot does the rest. This video, which has gone viral, is obviously not to be reproduced, at the risk of causing an accident.

Mixed reviews

While Apple CEO Tim Cook talks about a " revolutionary device "Augmented reality glasses and virtual or mixed reality headsets are nothing new.

Meta (Facebook, Instagram), Apple's neighbour in Silicon Valley, has made a major contribution to the emergence of this market with its Quest headsets and Ray-Ban glasses, but also by hammering home the idea that the future of the Internet would lie in a sort of "digital world". "metaversThis is a virtual universe where our physical and digital environments merge.

But despite these initial advances, companies, experts and individuals who believe in this future have been waiting impatiently for Apple's first device. The Apple brand has a reputation for launching only ultra-perfect products, which give the user the feeling of being at the cutting edge of technology. "the to the rest of the industry. Initial reviews have been mixed, especially given the prohibitive price tag.

Lack of applications

Testers said they were fascinated by the image quality and ease of use: all they had to do was stare at an application and tap their fingers to open or close it. But they were annoyed that the battery was bulky, and made fun of the "personasthese strange photorealistic avatars that represent users during videoconferences.

Another major problem is the lack of applications available in the App Store that are compatible with the Apple Vision Pro. Popular platforms such as Netflix and YouTube have chosen not to develop ad hoc applications for the Vision Pro for the time being. Although only 150 applications were initially planned, Apple has now doubled (and even quadrupled) its efforts, announcing on Thursday that it finally has more than 600.

Death of Carl Weathers

Actor Carl Weathers, famous for playing Apollo Creed in "Rocky" alongside Sylvester Stallone, and Colonel Al Dillon in "Predator" with Arnold Schwarzenegger, died on Thursday 2 February at the age of 76.
His family said in a statement that he had died peacefully in his sleep.
Younger fans will know him for his role as Greef Karga in "The Mandalorian".
