L’horloge de l’apocalypse n’a jamais été aussi proche de minuit, l’heure de la fin des temps

Il est minuit moins 90 secondes et cela signifie que l’humanité n’a jamais été aussi proche d’un cataclysme planétaire, a annoncé mardi le groupe de scientifiques qui gèrent l’horloge de l’apocalypse, qui surveille non pas le temps mais la fin des temps. La guerre en Ukraine est pointée du doigt.

Le « Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists », chargé de ce projet symbolique depuis 1947, a dévoilé lors d’une conférence de presse à Washington son nouvel horaire, censé mesurer l’imminence d’une catastrophe mondiale.

Il a été avancé de 10 secondes et marque désormais minuit moins 90 secondes, se rapprochant donc de minuit, l’heure fatidique qu’il espère ne jamais voir atteinte.

Les dangers de la guerre en Ukraine

Depuis 2020, l’horloge était à 100 secondes tout rond de minuit, un record depuis sa création. L’horloge de l’apocalypse « est un symbole qui mesure à quel point nous nous rapprochons d’une destruction du monde avec des technologies dangereuses que nous avons nous-mêmes fabriquées », selon les scientifiques.

« Nous avançons l’horloge, et c’est le plus près qu’elle ait jamais été de minuit », a dit le groupe en dévoilant le nouvel horaire, en évoquant notamment, mais « pas exclusivement », « les dangers croissants de la guerre en Ukraine ».

In addition to the war in Ukraine and the nuclear threat, the scientists took into account "the persistent threats posed by the climate crisis", as well as the fact that "devastating events, such as the Covid-19 pandemic, can no longer be considered as rare events that occur only once every hundred years". The group of experts also discussed misinformation and surveillance technologies.

Saving time in 1991

Originally, after the Second World War, the clock read minus 7 minutes to midnight. By 1991, at the end of the Cold War, it had moved back to 17 minutes before midnight. In 1953, as well as in 2018 and 2019, it showed minus 2 minutes to midnight.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists was founded in 1945 by Albert Einstein and scientists who had worked on the Manhattan Project, which produced the first atomic bomb. The group of experts sets the new time every year.

Germany to deliver Leopard 2 tanks to Kiev

According to Der Spiegel, Olaf Scholz will give the green light to this delivery, as requested by Kiev.

Finland and Poland ready to do it

In Berlin, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said on Wednesday morning that he had "expressly encouraged partner countries that have Leopard tanks ready for deployment to train Ukrainian forces on these tanks".

So far, Finland and Poland have said they are ready to do so. Warsaw, which wants to create a "coalition of countries supporting Ukraine with Leopard 2″ tanks, has officially sent a request to this effect, the receipt of which was confirmed by Berlin on Tuesday.

Iran: l’ONU accuse les autorités de «meurtres d’Etat» contre des manifestants

Les exécutions des manifestants sont une arme utilisée par le régime iranien. C’est l’accusation lancée par le Haut commissaire aux droits de l’homme.

L’ONU estime que les quatre exécutions de manifestants iraniens ces dernières semaines équivalent à des «meurtres d’Etat». Le Haut commissaire aux droits de l’homme Volker Türk a accusé mardi à Genève le régime islamique d’utiliser la peine capitale comme «une arme».

Les procès inéquitables n’ont pas répondu aux règles internationales en termes de droits humains, affirme-t-il. Selon lui, le gouvernement ferait mieux d’écouter les griefs de la population et de garantir les libertés fondamentales. Le Haut commissaire a réitéré son appel à un «moratoire immédiat» sur les exécutions.

Le Haut-Commissariat dénonce notamment une application de dispositions pénales vagues, le refus d’un accès à un avocat librement choisi ou des aveux contraints sous la torture. L’absence de la présomption d’innocence et le manque de possibilités de faire appel sont également ciblés. De même, la peine capitale a été imposée pour des crimes qui ne la justifient pas, insiste M. Türk. Elle doit être appliquée aux seules infractions d’extrême gravité comme des homicides volontaires.

Les quatre personnes exécutées l’ont été en secret, sans que leurs proches n’en soient informés. Cette approche viole le droit international, selon l’ONU. Près d’une vingtaine de manifestants supplémentaires auraient été condamnés à cette sentence, dont au moins une femme et deux personnes qui pourraient être exécutées prochainement, et plus d’une centaine pourraient y faire face.

Dispositif appliqué par les autorités

L’Iran a de son côté menacé mardi de punir «fermement» les personnes enfreignant la loi stricte sur le port du voile dans la répression des manifestations, prévoyant d’importants dispositifs contre celles-ci, selon un adjoint du procureur général. La justice du pays a annoncé une nouvelle condamnation à la peine capitale. Le Haut commissaire doit avoir une réunion prochainement à Genève avec les autorités iraniennes.

Edward Norton découvre qu’il descend de Pocahontas

The "Fight Club" and "Glass Onion" actor was revealed on a programme that the Indian princess was his 12th-generation great-grandmother.

L’émission «Find Your Roots» (trouvez vos racines) sur PBS fouille l’arbre généalogique des stars, L’animateur et historien Henry Louis Gates Jr a dévoilé mardi 3 janvier à Edward Norton que celui-ci était un descendant direct de la princesse indienne Pocahontas. Elle est en fait sa 12e arrière-grand-mère.

L’acteur de «Fight Club» ou récemment de «Glass Onion» savait qu’une telle rumeur existait dans sa famille, explique CNN, mais l’historien lui a déclaré qu’il y avait des traces écrites de ce lignage. Il est donc le descendant direct de Pocahontas et de son mari le colon John Rolfe dont le mariage eut lieu en 1614 en Virginie. Le couple eut un fils, Thomas Rolfe, en 1615, mais Pocahontas mourut en revenant de Londres, en 1617, à 22 ans, sans doute d’une pneumonie ou de tuberculose.

«Cela vous fait simplement réaliser à quel point vous êtes un petit… morceau de toute l’histoire humaine», a fait remarquer Norton après la révélation.

L’acteur a moins apprécié de savoir que sont troisième arrière-grand-père possédait des esclaves, dont des enfants. «C’est inconfortable de savoir cela et il y a de quoi être mal à l’aise. Un enfant esclave âgé de 8 ans: vous avez envie de mourir en lisant cela».

Cousin de Julia Roberts

Invitée la même soirée, Julia Roberts a découvert elle aussi qu’elle avait un ancêtre esclavagiste. Et qu’elle partageait une lignée ADN avec Edward Norton. «Cela signifie que vous avez hérité de cet ADN partagé d’un ancêtre lointain, quelque part au cœur de cet arbre généalogique» a expliqué l’historien.
